The old Duke, after a long time abroad, is visiting his Gentleman's Club, but all the rooms are empty, and none of his old cronies are around. Only one elderly man is sitting at the bar.
The Duke moves over to sit down at the bar (because sitting by himself seems utterly boring to him). He addresses the old man.
"Sir, would you care to join me for a glass of Cognac?"
The old man replies, "No. Tried drinking once, hated it."
The old Duke then asks for his personal humidor from the bartender. He offers a cigar to the old chap who waves his hand in refusal and disgust. "No. Tried smoking once, hated it."
"Well then, might I suggest a game of Bridge?"
"No.” The old man replies. “Tried Bridge once, hated it. But my son will be here in half an hour, he plays."
The Duke responds, "Your only son, I suppose?"
